Kim MordauntScreenwriter | Director

Kim Mordaunt is a multi-award-winning filmmaker who is currently developing films with Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Matthias Schoenaerts and Scott Free.

The Rocket, which Kim wrote and directed, won over 45 awards including three at Berlinale (Best Debut Feature, Crystal Bear, Amnesty International Prize); three at Tribeca (Best Narrative Feature, Best Actor, the Audience Award); the Audience Award at more than ten festivals including AFI Fest LA; Best Original Screenplay at the AACTA’s and AWGIES; and, Best Film Director at the ADG Awards. The film was selected for Sundance’s Film Forward, has a 97% “Fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, was released theatrically in the US and UK and, sold to over 40 countries.

Kim directed for the limited drama series Fires (ABC/Matchbox) created by Belinda Chayko (Emmy winner for Safe Harbour) and Tony Ayres (Clickbait), EP Liz Watts (The King), starred Sam Worthington (Avatar), Anna Torv (Mindhunter) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects). It won the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award for Best Miniseries, and the TV Week Silver Logie Award for Most Outstanding Miniseries or Telefeature. Kim is currently in production on Boy Swallows Universe, based on the highly successful novel by Trent Dalton. The series is produced by Brouhaha Entertainment and Anonymous Content for Netflix.

In 2021, Kim directed (with Jocelyn Moorhouse) the drama series Wakefield, for Jungle Entertainment and BBC Studios (ABC). The series received a 5-star review and was named the Best Australian Drama that year by The Guardian and nominated for 8 AACTA Awards including Best Drama Series and Best Director for Kim.

Kim is currently in pre-production for the drama/thriller feature Wildlands, which he wrote with John Collee (Master and Commander), starring Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and BoneThe Danish Girl) with producers Sylvia Wilczynski, Dean Baker (Taboo) and Tom Hardy.

Prior to stepping behind the camera to direct, Kim worked as an actor – training at LAMDA – and a cinematographer. He is a graduate in Media Arts and Production at UTS, Sydney.

His feature documentary Bomb Harvest was theatrically released in Australia and sold to television in over 35 countries.

Kim’s mother was Indian Mauritian and his father English. His extended family are Indian Mauritian, Fijian Indian, Indonesian, Chinese, English and Polish.
